My neighbor back in India and Siri aren’t friends. And she isn’t fond of ChatGPT either. They just don’t get each other. She — like another 20 million people — speaks Maithili but Siri and ChatGPT don’t and that’s that. A very human problem but one that machines were expected to solve. And perhaps soon they will.
ChatGPT, the smooth-talking algorithmic charmer, may not be in your life yet but its older cousins surely are. Much of our online life is mediated by algorithmic decision-making systems (ADM) but that’s not where their impact stops.
Imagine a miner that retired 20 years ago returning to a modern mine today. Let’s start with her clothes. Her jacked might look the same but it’s now ‘smart’ and constantly monitors her body temperature, blood pressure, heart rate, and breathing rate. This keeps her safe but can also alert her supervisor when she is fatigued or delinquent. Her glasses are smart too
